Deworming schedule:
We are not a veterinarians, we follow our veterinarian's advice on deworming our moms and the puppies.
-Two weeks prior to our dachshund Moms going into heat, she is treated with Panacur for 3 days. This is
because the females are most vulnerable to parasites throughout conception, pregnancy, whelping and rearing
her puppies.
* Birth, on second day the Moms are treated with Nemex for 2 days.
* Puppies are treated with Nemex at 2-3-4 weeks of age
* At 6 weeks, the puppies are treated with Drontal Plus
* At 8 weeks of age, when the puppies receive their first set of shots, they are treated with Panacur.
If we get loose stools, we retreat off schedule. Fecal tests are NOTORIOUS for coming back as a false
negative. It has nothing to do with the skill of the tester, some parasites are harder to detect.
It is also important to bring a stool sample in to your veterinarian when you bring your puppy in for it's
second sets of shots.
Bringing home your new puppy:
It is very common that when you bring home your new puppy, it can have loose stools or even diarrhea. This
does not mean that your puppy has parasites, but has been stressed out due to the trip home, change of
environment and sometimes even just the change of water can trigger this. It is important to keep your puppy
quiet for the first few days, start a daily routine, bond with your puppy,DO NOT change your puppy's diet, if
you need to change the diet, please do it gradually, to avoid further stress on your puppy. You can boil chicken
and rice to help with loose stools. This works well also for puppies that may be picky eaters.
Until your puppy has had all of it's vaccinations, avoid going to dog parks, grooming shops or highly traffic
areas. There are many airborne diseases that your puppy is especially vulnerable to until all vaccinations are
completed. Also, try to keep your puppy away from strangers, take this time to bond with your puppy, to give
your puppy time to adjust to you and his new home. Pictures are a great way to show off your new addition
and to start a scrapbook, that has become quite popular.
